Am I the only one who looks at the newspaper in the morning or the headlines on Yahoo news and just cringes? It’s almost daily, it seems, that there is another shooting, another racial incident, another something to at least get me to furrow my brow.
How easy it is to be discouraged.
But isn’t that what the enemy wants? Doesn’t Satan want to steal our joy? Shake our confidence a bit? Put a little fear in our hearts?
Hmmm. That makes me angry.
And I reject it! I am a child of the Most High. A daughter of a Heavenly King. And nothing – nothing in this world – can take that away from me.
After last week’s news I needed to hear these words again:
God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;
Though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
It would be easy, so easy, to listen to the news and to give up hope. So easy to jump on the bandwagon of ‘the world is falling apart,’ or ‘the end times must be near.’ I don’t know when Christ is coming back and neither do you because we are not supposed to know. We are supposed to be ready.
But while we wait, while things are in such chaos around us and so many things seem uncertain, one thing is certain.
God is still in control. He promises never to leave us.
Don’t give up hope!! Don’t despair. Even if the Big One hits California, even if the terrorists succeed in another attack, even if the election doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, the God of Jacob is still our stronghold! Everything can fall apart; God is still in control. And if you belong to Him, nothing that happens in this world matters. The Lord of hosts is with us. That is what we cling to.
